Free Riff-1 – Heartbreaker

Alright, so the first we’re going to look at is the riff from Heartbreaker. So this one here we just start off here on the fifth fret of the low E string and we’re gonna pick that and then do a hammer-on to the eighth fret with your fourth finger, all eighth notes, well we put an accent here… And then on the downbeat of two we just do the same thing, but on the A string; so again the fifth fret and then the eighth fret but on the A string, so… And then starting on the downbeat of three we’re gonna bar the fifth fret of the D and the G string and we’re gonna pick that and then do a hammer-on to the seventh fret of the D and the G string with your third finger and that’s sixteenth notes; so that’s like the downbeat of three… And then on the and of three we come back to the eighth fret of the A string with your fourth finger and then for the downbeat of four we’ll all beat four it’s a quarter note. You come to the fifth fret and throw some vibrato on it and that’s our first measure. So when we hit this on beat four it’s tied to the downbeat of one of the second measure, so we’re four one and then on the and of one we reach up and grab the eighth fret of the low E string and back to this fifth fret for beat two with some vibrato again. Then on the downbeat of three we just do a muted note, so I’m letting this ring and I just release the pressure and then just pick the string and reach over the eighth fret on the A string for the and of three and then back to the fifth fret for beat four and then it just repeats…

Free Riff-2 – Mr Big

So next we’re going to look at the riff from the song Mr Big, this one here is really simple. We’ve got this E minor seventh chord (Em7). So the first thing we want to do is get our fingers into that shape. So starting on the high E string we’re going to put our pinky onto the third fret of the high E string and we’re going to put our third finger on to the third fret of the B string. Then we’re going to take our second finger and put it on the second fret of the D string and our first finger on the second fret of the A string. Then the riff starts out we rest on almost all of the first measure and then the last two sixteenth notes of beat four is the A string open hammered to the second fret… so you with this finger here it can be a little bit in the way, but it’s just a lot easier if you keep your fingers here in the shape of this chord. So we’ve got… and then we follow that with the open low E string on the downbeat of one… then we rest on the and of one and on the downbeat of two and then on the and of two we hit that chord; so we’ve got… Now that is basically the entire riff and the only there’s just some minor changes throughout it. So we start with that and after we hit this on the and of two we rest on all of beat three and then the downbeat of beat four and then on the and of four it’s just basically the same way the first measure was… So again on the and of four and then the beginning of the third measure one and two and three and or excuse me three and four and then on the and, you know the very last two 16th notes… that’s basically it.

Free Riff-3 – All Right Now

All right and then the last one to look at is All Right Now and for this one here we start off we’ve got a like just a really big full voicing of A5… So we’re going to take our pinky and we’re gonna barre it across the fifth fret of the B and high E string and then we’re gonna take our first finger and we’re gonna pick up the second fret of the D and G string and then the A string is open. So we have this on the downbeat of one or all of one it’s a quarter note one two three and, so on the and of three we hit the open A string again and then we’re going to go to this different chord voicing. So now we’re going to go to a D over f sharp (D/F#). So from here your first finger is already here picking up the second fret of the G string, so we’re just going to take our second finger and put it on the third fret of the B string and then our third finger onto the fourth fret of the D string… We hit this on four and then on the next measure beat number one is that A5 chord again and then we rest two three four… So on the and before the second measure we hit that open string and then we’re going to go down and do this same chord that we were doing a second ago, but now what we want to do is take our first finger and remove it or roll it up out of the way whatever you want to do because now the chord here we’ve got the fourth fret of the D string, the G string is open and we’re on the third fret of the B string and the first string is open… Then we go back to the D/F# so second and third finger already where they need to be, we just need to bring our first finger up so it’s picking up the second fret of the G string now… then an A5… and then right back to that A5/E and then and that’s one two three four and then it would just repeat…
