So I started working on my strumming approach (while still throwing in the licks and melodies).
But I was still overcomplicating it.
So then I really “dumbed it down” for myself and focused ONLY on the riffs and the strumming, knowing that this would be a great foundation and probably will fill in a lot of the holes in my entire approach.
Kenny Wayne Shepherd is another big inspiration.
I started with some really rock solid and simple riffs that I knew just worked. But then, as things always go… the more time I spent on it, the more things opened up.
I started with basic stuff, and then began to notice things like: “Oh, I could also play these notes instead”. Or: “Wow, I could use an inversion of the chord here”. Or: “Hey,I could flatten out my finger and get a 9 chord just like Stevie does, and use that in my riff. Cool!”
