Hey, how’s it going guys this is Jon McLennan with Guitar Control, bringing you this video lesson and we’re looking at “West Side Baby” this is the Intro to West Side Baby by T-Bone Walker. T-Bone Walker wrote a number of slow blues, and one of his famous was the Stormy Monday, of course I remember watching an interview with BB King, one time he talked about the first time he learned the ninth chord, you know it’s from T-Bone Walker because he came out and had this sound like. He never knew how to make those sounds and he was mesmerized by T-Bone Walker’s guitar playing.
So the shape I’m playing for the intro to this tune is basically the fret that I’m landing on, would be 11, 10, 11, 11, 11, and that’s a dominant ninth. You can move that up and down the whole neck and get a number of dominant nines. Basically, wherever you put your second finger that’s the root note.

You kind of slide into each chord in the tab so it moves chromatically, just down in half steps and then cut and play the chord, hold it down and slide. It takes a little bit of strength to be able to do that, and then this lands us on the v chord f9, and we’re going to play a b9 to a b flat nine, and that’s the typical kind of sound you hear all the time approaching a chord, whether it be a half step below or a half step above so that’s the intro there.
The chord that I’m playing here start with the b9, I’ve got seven, seven, six, seven, and then that goes down just a half step to the tonic b flat blues.
