Hey, how’s it going this is Jon McLennan with Guitar Control, I’m excited to bring you this video lesson and we’re looking at a Classic by Buddy Guy called “Moanin”. It’s originally written by Bobby Timmons and another great version of it with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, this is basically a blues in F and I’m going to show you the melody and how you can interpret it and work on your blues feelings.

We’ve got an F minor pentatonic phrase and we start on the 3rd fret, to begin this first line I’m using just my first and third finger, then I do a B flat with an F in the bass and play this with my third finger barring the B flat triad. A lot of times that would be something that’s left to the Bands so the melody just goes the band play those hits but I like to incorporate both parts.
Second line goes like this, notice a little blues flavor, accessing that blue note from the blues scale F blues scale, back to our B flat over F phrase number three so that’s a 3, 3, and then I take three slide up to five, play 4 and back down to this real common blues phrasing. Back to the line and then repeat the 1st phrase again.
It’s got a real strong rhythm to it and a lot of repetition; you know this is kind of a riff blues where it’s sort of building off these basic ideas.
