Hope you enjoy today’s lesson… I’ll announce trivia winner from yesterday’s
question tomorrow.

Apparently my directions weren’t very clear because many people said “Led Zeppelin”,
and I wasn’t talking about the song i played on the guitar, i was talking about the audio
sample.

Looks like we had a little “communication breakdown” of our own …ho ho ho… ha ha ha…

Talk soon!

GREAT XMAS GIFT: THE JIMMY DILLON COLLECTION

Well, we’re just flying by, already on
Day 10 of the 12 Days of Christmas.
Here’s another Jimmy Dillon lesson.

All right, that was obviously Jimi Hendrix.
I put it through like a hip hop kind of
jungle beat there. I just wanted to show
you that because it’s something that
sometimes I like to mash-up stuff,
change it around, cross pollinate,
do a different kind of groove and
maybe a cool Hendrix lick over it.

But what I’m going to show you right
now is something totally different.
I’m in the wah-wah mode, but I’m going
to show you two songs that I believe both
have a connection in George Harrison’s garden.
We’re in the Garden here. This is my
garden. This is like my little deal.
But I can remember reading something
about Eric Clapton and he writing in
his garden and I think “Here Comes
the Sun” was one of them.

Now, he did it in a different key with a capo,
but the reason I want to show you this,
and I’m not going to go too in depth with it,
because everybody knows that song. But I wanted
to do that along with a great
Cream song called “Badge”.

What those two have in common is they
have a similar kind of feel to them. “Badge”
obviously has a certain sound. I’m using
a chorus, ensemble chorus, on this one.
You can also use a
Rotovibe or whatever you want.
But that sound, it’s just almost
like a cathedral kind of sound or
an organ.

I just wanted to run that by you as
my lesson for the day, not to really
show you the lick but to just discuss
the sound and how it goes. If you’ve got
a chorus and a little bit of echo you can
really kind of… It sounds like you’re in
Grace Cathedral or Westminster Abby or
something like that.

So I just love that kind of sound. And
if you like what you’re hearing, that
kind of sort of unraveling of how to get
the sound, like Clapton, like Harrison,
check out Eclectic Electric Guitar
Number II. That’s why I’m here today.
So if you like Number I, which I think
some of you did — I know I did. I had
a lot of fun making it — check out
Eclectic Electric Number II. It’s chock-full
of things like this, but also some funky blues,
some great old rock and roll. So check us out.
I’m going to get a little bigger with it.
See you soon.

All right. I hope you enjoyed that. More
stuff coming so stay tuned. I’ll see you
tomorrow. Ho, ho, ho.

Well, it’s Day 8 of the 12 Days of Christmas
and I promise no crazy rhyming or rapping today,
just a killer lesson from Jimmy Dillon.
Check it out.

So you say you like a little wang bar.
Who doesn’t? It’s a cool sound of the ventures.
Today, once again, I’m going to show you
two licks for the price of one.
This one is, of course, “Pipeline”.
You all recognize that one.

I’ve got a little tremolo on it. I love
the sound of tremolo. It’s got that mystery
sound, right? But then I’m also doubling-up
on the wang bar. Now in this case — this is
a beautiful guitar that I had made. It’s a
gorgeous piece. I wanted to kind of mix a
Gretsch and a Gibson together, so I did.
A guy made it for me and I got it signed
by Eric Clapton and B.B. King. I’m wearing
everything off, but who cares?

But I’m also going to double this up with
another great lick that you might recognize.
Kind of a similar vibe, isn’t it? You think
about surf music, heavy reverb, tremolo, the
James Bond stuff, which is, now with this new
James Bond movie, “Sky Fall” I think it’s called.
James Bond is back. I remember Sean Connery,
he was to me, he was like the consonant Ian
Flemming character.

But I love the sound of guitar in movies, and
that’s a classic. Everything from Quinton Tarantino
all the way to Peter Gunn. Just really sexy and fun.
So let me show you that little “Pipeline” lick.

So we start out with a… So really what
you’re working off is an A minor chord. It’s
really quite simple. So when I started that thing
out — it’s like that, right? I’m just running from
an E to a G. I’m hitting an open E, a B on my A
string and then a G note on my E string. That’s it.
That’s how that rhythm goes.

Now that I did was I kind of trick.
Sometimes I’ll drag my pinkie, or you
can do it with a pick. Here’s the lick.
I’ll take that a little bit slower for you.
It starts out on a B note and it goes like this.
You do the same exact lick, but in A position.
Then I go to a B chord, to a C chord, back
to a B chord, to a C chord.

So that was obviously a little descending, a
little double picking thing. That’s something
you can practice. Again, I cover this in Eclectic
Electric Number II. I cover all this kind of stuff.
It’s vibe-y stuff, really. It’s got a great
vibe to it.

Now, on to James Bond. That’s pretty easy. This
is the first lick I ever learned on guitar; I swear
to God. It really is. I could only play one string;
I could barely do that. But I could do the James Bond.

GREAT XMAS GIFT: THE JIMMY DILLON COLLECTION

Welcome to Day 7 of the 12 Days of Christmas.
Yes, it’s me, Santa Claude Johnson and here’s
another lesson from the man, the myth,
the legend, Jimmy Dillon.

All right, we all know that song. It’s
the intro for “Layla”. Now that’s one of
the most iconic rock licks that I can think
of and, you know, I’m talking about my new
product Eclectic Electric number II. We did
number I last year. It’s chock-full of all
kinds of iconic, really cool rock licks,
you know, legendary stuff and also some
original stuff as well.

But I wanted to give you one that
you could remember and show you how
it goes. It’ basically starting on
an A string. That’s a pretty easy little lick.
Then you kind of walk down a little D chord.
So it’s just D, C, E flat. Play it on
the A and D string.

We’ve all heard that lick a million
times and some of you probably know it.
The high lick goes… So what’s really
clever about that is that they both lock-in
together in a really interesting sort of
off-hand kind of way.

Now the ending, as you probably know, is
played by Duane Allman. I’ll get to
that later. That’s a slide piece and
that’s a little bit trickier. It’s got a
beautiful melody, of course, that climbs.

So I wanted to give you a little bit of
“Layla” and show you how it goes and let you
know that I’m going to be teaching one lesson
every day, leading right up to the release of
Eclectic Electric Number II. So stick around,
stay with us.

Thank you so much for watching. I really hope

GREAT XMAS GIFT: THE JIMMY DILLON COLLECTION

Ho, ho, ho. Santa Claude Johnson back again
with Day 5 of the 12 Days of Christmas.
Jimmy Dillon has another lesson for
you today. Check it out.

Hey there. I’m Jimmy Dillon, back with
some more iconic rock and roll licks. In
this case we’re beyond rock and roll;
we’re into the grand — the godfather of
soul, really, the grandfather of soul,
James Brown, of course. You recognize that
lick. Of course, that’s from the very,
very funky, “I got You”. And of course
he used that 9th chord a lot.
I talk a lot about this in
Eclectic Electric number II.
This is a new product that has just all
kinds of really cool electric guitar stuff.
Eclectic it is; electric is also is, because
it goes all different kinds of places,
gets exotic. It gets rootsy, it gets funky
and this is the funk lesson.

So when you’re playing obviously this is
a great Strat. This is the guitar
that I play the most, my green guitar.
It’s an Eric Clapton Strat. If you’re
playing on an A 9th like this, you’ve
got to have kind of a nice, smooth touch
with the pick. You kind of scratch
the strings like that. It’s all about
the rhythm, isn’t it, on that one? If
you play a little A 9th chord and you
go all the way up to a B, same chord,
same form, you can either go all the
way up to that B or down here. Either
way it resolves so you can get really,
really trippy on that.

Then there’s a little lick that goes…
That’s just working off of the E. You’ve
got a low E, then an octave E, D, B, D, B, D, G.
So there’s that. So if you put
those two together you get the
James Brown feel.

Now I’m going to give you a bonus right now.
You ready? So we’re going to go right from
James Brown to another very funky player,
but in a different way, Jimi Hendrix.

Okay, now that wasn’t note-for-note; it
was my version of it, but you know what
I’m talking about, of course I’m talking
about the “Voodoo Child”. Jimi had the
voodoo. He had the mojo. He had it all.
I saw him in 1968 in Chicago play that
very lick, that song. And as a 15-year-old
boy, I tell you, I had my mind totally blown.
I’d never seen anything like it. And you
know what? I still haven’t seen anything
like it ever since. So we’re going to go
from James Brown right into Jimi Hendrix
and here’s how it goes.

Now, you might call that a little bit of
a mash-up and it’s funny that I mention
that because at the end of all these lessons
I’m doing for you, I’m going to take every one
of these licks that I’ve given you, these
little backyard lessons, and I’m going to
make one song that strings all these things
together. So stick around for that. That’s
going to be at the very end of this give-away.
But come and see us again and, again, I’m really
excited about Eclectic Electric number II. If
you like number I, this one is even better.
We’ll see you later.

doesn’t he? To get the full-meal deal, just

GREAT XMAS GIFT: THE JIMMY DILLON COLLECTION

Well, it’s Santa Claude Johnson and it’s Day 4
of the 12 Days of Christmas. Jimmy Dillon
has another guitar lesson for you today.
Let’s check it out.

Hey there. I’m Jimmy Dillon and I’m back
with my backyard tips. I’m really excited
about my new product, Eclectic Electric
number II. Number I was last year. We had
a great time doing it and I think you had
a good time checking it out.

I wanted to show you a little bit of
Keith Richards and Muddy Waters because
those guys are inextricably connected.
Muddy came first, obviously, but the
Stones picked up on that whole bluesy
thing and then rocked it out.

So I got this guitar in Paris. I was
telling these guys earlier, from James
Trussart and I saw the Rolling Stones
at the Olympia Theater back in the ’90s
some time. Fantastic tour and it really
just moved me. So I bought this guitar.
I was so excited when I got this. James
Trussart has gone on to become an amazing
guitar maker. This one is signed by Sonny
Landreth who’s a fabulous slide player, and
it has that sound, you know. It has that
great old blues sound.

So what I wanted to share with you is when
we’re playing something like “Hoochie Coochie
Man” and a lot of blues songs with it, it just
goes like this. So you’re really working on the 4,
the 3 and the 1. A very simple way to do it is if
you’re in a G tuning, D, G; D, G, B, D. That’s the
open tuning. A lot of the old blues guys used that
tuning because you get a great voicing.

Now you can either play slide or just with your
finger like this. So really slowly. It’s open
G, C, G, B flat, G. It’s one really easy way to
do it. So I’m teaching a lot of kids at Blue Star
Music Camp, I show them how to do this move. You
can do this, you can do this, you can do that,
then you can do this. And you’re a
blues boy or girl.

Moving on from the blues, the blues
had a baby and they called it rock and roll.
I wanted to show you this is
two-for-one day. I’m going to
show you a Brown Sugar. Now if
you try to do this not in G tuning,
it’s never going to sound quite right
because you need that E string tuned
down to D to get this sound.

So if you listen hard you can hear there’s
a little bit of blues in that lick, but
it’s kick-ass rock and roll. So if you
like this kind of stuff and you want to
get more into details, check-out Eclectic
Electric II. And I’ve got a lot more iconic
rock licks for you, so stick around.

Okay. I hope you enjoyed that and we’re
not even half way done with the 12 Days
of Christmas. We’ve got a lot more great
stuff coming, starting tomorrow. So don’t
