As usual, don’t forget to subscribe to our YouTube channel for daily guitar lessons. There’s a link in this group, so make sure you tap on it or click on it so you can get the tab and follow along with this video. We’re going to be, by the way, checking out a really, really easy way to play this song for all of you on acoustic guitar or electric guitar who just wants to play a song, one of the biggest hits of all time, one of the classics, right? And sing along with it. So yeah, stay for this video. So let’s get down to it.
What we’re going to do, we’re going to check out the chords first for the verse. Actually, well, we’re going to check it out for the verse, the pre-chorus, and the chorus. Okay? So for the verse, very, very simple actually for the verse. The verse starts actually … Well, the actual song starts a little bit with an intro, but we’re going to go straight up into the verse where she starts singing, right?
We’re going to go into this B. Originally it’s a B Major, but I like to play it like this. I think it sounds way cooler and brings the vibe of the song a little bit more. It makes it easier for you to play, as well. So for this sort of B, let’s call it Power B because there’s just a little bit more notes on it. We’re going to play, so our index finger on the second fret of the fifth, ring finger on the fourth fret on the fourth, pinkie on the fourth fret of the third.
We’re going to avoid playing the sixth, but we’re going to play the second and the first open, ok?. What you can do, you can grab your middle finger and mute the sixth a little bit. Slightly put it over so it doesn’t sound … So when you hit it by accident, you’re not going to be like … No, you’re going to be like … It’s muted there, but try to avoid playing it. It’s going to be even a better sound. From there, you’re going to go two frets up to the fourth fret with that same structure, but you’re going to bring your middle finger into this one, into this fifth fret of the second. Ideally you want to put the index finger all across the fourth fret. So. You repeat that twice and that’s your chord, your verse.
Okay, so for the rhythm for the part … For the verse, for the rhythm of the verse, listen.
So what I’m doing there, I’m doing down up and I am muting it, muting the chord, and I do down up. Now just repeat that, so I do down, up, muted down up, down up, muted down up. Okay?at the end I do down, okay? And then I do muted down up. That’s it. Now repeat that twice, so … Repeat it and then the other chord.
Now we’re going to go into the pre-chorus. For the pre-chorus, we’re going to go into this F Sharp Minor. If you’ve seen my other videos in this series of covers, you know this chord, definitely. So for those of you who don’t know it, it’s super easy. Middle finger on the second fret of the six, ringer finger on the second fret of the fourth string, pinkie finger on the second fret of the third. You are not going to play the fifth, okay? There you go. That’s the first chord of the actual chorus, pre-chorus. From there, we’re going to move this up to two frets and bring the index finger into the second fret of the fifth. So …
Perfect right? And then from there, we’re going to go check this out. This is going to be an inversion of an E Major, but we’re going to play it like this. So for that, you’re going to place your … This is the only one that you kind of have to stretch a little bit, but you want to bring your middle finger onto the fourth fret of the sixth string, then the index finger … Here’s a stretch, huh? Index finger into the second fret of the fourth, ring finger on the fourth fret of the third, and pinkie on the fifth fret of the second string. Naturally, the fifth is going to be muted. But yeah, muted fifth.
From there, A Major. If you don’t know the A Major, second fret of the fourth, third and second string of the index, middle, and ring finger. So we got … Okay, pretty cool, right? Now for that part. For that part, we’re going to play … You’re going to play the F Sharp Minor. You want to play the E over G, which is the … and check this out. We’re going to go into this one right here. For that, you want to … You’re going to place your index on the seventh fret of the second, middle finger on the eight fret of the third, pinkie finger on the nine fret of the fourth, and ring finger on the nine fret of the sixth. Right, so … So you play this twice, this once and then this once. Like that. Okay?
And then is … It’s very simple. We’re going to use power chords actually and you’re going to go place your index finger on the fourth fret of the six, ring finger on the sixth fret of the fifth, and pinkie finger on the sixth fret of the fourth. And then you’re going to do it from there, one fret up, one fret down, one fret up, two frets up. See? So we go.
If it’s too hard for you to go … You could position go … only that, so skip the first one, right? And now for the chorus, very, very simple actually. For the chorus, you just repeat … E Major’s four time. Then we go into this one, which is the second chord that you play in the verse, right? A C Minor or C Sharp Minor. We’re going to play this one twice, then we’re going to A Major once, F Sharp Minor, and you’re going to split this with the first chord that you were playing.
So by splitting, you only play this once, like that, and then move to this one, and then back to the E Major. Right? I’m playing it a bit hard now, but you can play with the dynamics and use whatever works for you, whatever instrument you have, but anyway, that’s all. It’s a super simple song, right? The only thing is that in the bridge, when it goes like, “Somebody who,” right? “Somebody who, somebody who.” Something like that, right? I mean, I don’t got the greatest voice, but you get it. It’s actually the verse, but inverted. Instead of playing this, you play first this one twice and then go to this one twice. And then it goes back to the pre-chorus that we know.
And yeah, that’s it for today. This is a really, really good song. I would check it out if you haven’t and it’s a new song to your arsenal, so you can go to, I don’t know, hang out with your friends or just post videos on YouTube and sing along with songs or just for you to practice.
