Later on, I learned (from great teachers) how they could be useful for shredding rock licks, but I still wasn’t clued into how powerful they are for playing blues, especially riffs.
At some recent point in my musical journey, I felt a bit stuck with my blues chops, and started looking into jazz. I thought “If nothing else, this will improve my overall understanding and musicianship”. And what did I learn? Well, one of the most important revelations was that jazz musicians think in terms of “playing over changes”.
That means they are really focusing on playing the chord tones through any given chord progression or song. In some sense, they are using arpeggios (not scales!) as the basis for everything they do. And this revelation blew my mind.
But then, I had another epiphany. I said to myself “Why can’t I use this kind of sophisticated approach to play the blues? I should try to master playing the arpeggios over a 12 bar blues progression”.
So I started digging into this stuff, and it turned out to be one of the biggest breakthroughs in a long time. No joke.
