Lesson On How to Play Undone The Sweater Song Chords

In this Guitar Control lesson video instructor, John Mclennan is going to show you How To Play “Undone” The Sweater Song – Weezer. This is a really cool little riff and it has some cool changes in it. So basically you are moving through three different chord shapes and instead of strumming them, they are going to arpeggiate them. This means to play the notes of a chord individually. There is just something about this riff that is so cool. It’s kinda slow and swampy and just has so much attitude to it. It’s also fairly simple and is a great song for beginners!

Step 1: Shape One

Step one to learning How To Play Undone The Sweater Song – Weezer is making sure you know these chord shapes! First John places his second finger on the 3rd fret 6th string. Then he is going to skip a string and put his first finger down on the 2nd fret 4th string and then he places his ring finger down on the 3rd fret 3rd string. This is our first chord. Now while you hold this shape you are going to pick each one of these notes. Starting with the 6th string, to the 4th string, to the 3rd string, to the 2nd string, picking them all as eighth notes.

Step 2: Shape Two

For shape two all you do is move your second finger down one string, leave your other fingers down still where they were for the first shape. So now you have your second finger on the 3rd fret 5th string, your pointer on the 2nd fret 4th string, and your ring finger on the 3rd fret 3rd string.Then you are going to pick this one from the 5th string straight down to the 2nd. So pick the 5th string, the 4th string, the 3rd string, and then the 2nd string. Now try to put both of these shapes together. Follow along with John in the video at the 1:47 minute mark. Step 3: Shape Three

For shape three you just take shape two and move it up the neck two frets. So instead of thinking of this shape being around the 3rd fret, it is now around the 5th. So you have your second finger on the 5th fret 5th string, your pointer on the 4th fret 4th string, and your ring finger down on the 5th fret 3rd string. And I’m sure you guessed what we are going to do now! Just go ahead and pick straight down from the 5th string to the 2nd. So pick the 5th string, pick the 4th string, pick the 3rd string, and then pick the 2nd string. Then return back down to shape two, the same shape as this one, shape three, but now focused around the 3rd fret again. So second finger back on the 3rd fret 5th string, pointer on the 2nd fret 4th string, and your ring finger on the 3rd fret 3rd string. Pick straight down from the 5th string and the way to the 2nd string one at a time, just like you did before and on all of the other shapes used in this song.
