Hey, how’s it going guys this is John McLennan, I’m excited to bring you this video lesson for Guitar Control and we’re looking at a classic by Buddy Guy called “Moanin”. It’s originally written by Bobby Timmons, and another great version made by Art Blakey. The Jazz Messengers are basically a blues in f, and I’m going to show you the kind melody and how you can interpret it and will work on your blues feelings.
Check the image above to follow the chords and tabs.
Let’s jump in, here we’ve got an f minor pentatonic phrase and we start on the third fret and it’s going to begin with the first line, using my first and third finger three, three, one, one, three, three, then my second finger, and then first, third, after that I’ll do a b flat with an f in the base and play this with my third finger barring a b flat triad, then I put my thumb on f.
A lot of times would be something that’s left to the band, so the melody just goes. You know then, when the band plays those hits, but I like to incorporate both parts second line like this, notice a little blues flavor, accessing that blue note from the blue scale right f blue scale looks like this, just do a little kind of slide trill between those notes back to our b flat over f phrase number three.
That’s three, three, and then take three slide up to five, play four, and then back down. This is a real common blues phrasing stuff, like back to the line and then you repeat the first phrase again. So she’s got a real strong rhythm to it and a lot of repetition, this kind of riff blues where it’s just sort of building off basic ideas of the first motif.
Let’s see if we can do the whole thing together, here we go a one, two, three, four, one, all right. Be sure to subscribe on our YouTube Channel and we’ll see you in our next video, thanks for watching.
