What is The Best Way to Learn Guitar?

If you are asking what the best way to learn guitar is, then you are probably new to guitar and are just starting out, or you are looking to learn guitar and want to make sure you do it right from the very beginning. Well, unfortunately, it’s very hard, and maybe even impossible, to determine what the best method actually is, because everyone is different. We all learn differently, and certain methods that work for some do not always work for everyone else. However, while we can’t be sure of the best way to learn, we can be sure of some best practices to help you learn more easily.

Practice
There’s a reason there’s a saying that goes “Practice makes perfect.” It’s because it’s true! No matter how good anyone is at playing guitar, they did not start out that way. They practiced and put time into learning it; nobody picks up a guitar for the first time and starts shredding immediately. If you want to truly learn guitar, you have to practice, and you have to be sure to carve out time in your schedule to practice. That is one of the best ways to learn and improve your guitar playing abilities.

Approach Guitar with an Open Mind
To truly be a great musician, you need to keep an open mind when it comes to techniques, styles, genres of music, etc. You never know what you will learn from trying out a new technique, no matter how outrageous it may initially sound to you. Also, even if you only listen to one style of music, don’t automatically stick your nose up at other styles just because you think yours is the best. Everyone thinks they know what’s best, but that obviously can’t be true. So if you want to be a better player, and better musician overall, approach guitar and music with an open mind and you’ll surely learn something.

Always Look for a Challenge
If you get to a certain point in your playing where you’re comfortable, and haven’t learned something new in a while, that means it’s time to start looking for a new challenge. The only way to improve is to test yourself and actively find new things to try and master. If you’re a beginner and you already got a hang of playing open chords, try out a new type of chord, such as a power chord or barre chord. If you can read music in the first position, look for new pieces that involve playing in another position, such as the fourth or the ninth. There is always something new to learn. Don’t stagnate or ever stop learning.

While there’s no proven best way to learn guitar, use these best practices to find your own method that works for you. Just remember to keep practicing whatever way you find, keep your ears and mind open, and be on the lookout for new challenges. That is truly the best way to learn guitar, and almost everything else.
