Billy Squier Riff-1 – The Stroke

All right so the first 3 Billy Squier Riff we’re going to look at is the riff from The Stroke. So we start off we’ve got just this D5 power chord; so on the fifth fret of the A string with my first finger and then you can just use your third finger to barre the seventh fret of the D and the G string or you could use your third finger on the D string and your fourth finger on the G string. And these are 16th notes on the downbeat of one, and then for the and of one we’re gonna move up here to the sixth fret of the B string and then on the downbeat of two hit it again and then to the and of two to the fifth fret; so it’s like… And then it just does the same thing for beats three and four… like that. Then starting on the second measure we do one more so the first half of that same thing… Then we’re going to go to C5; so we’re just going to take this shape and we’re going to move it down a whole step and then to a G5 so we’re just going to take that shape and move it down a set of strings so now my first fingers on the third fret of the low E string and I’m picking up the fifth fret of the D and the G string with my third and fourth finger…

Bily Squier Riff-2 Lonely Is The Night

All right so next we’re going to look at is the riff from Lonely is The Night. So this one here we’re going to start off with an E5 power chord; so it’s the same shape that we did here for D, we’re just going to move it up a whole step so now my first finger is getting the seventh fret of the A string and then I’m picking up the ninth fret of the D and G string and you can use your third and fourth finger or just your third finger, whatever is more comfortable for you. So for this one we hit this E5 on the downbeat of one and then on the and of one we hit it again and then… take your third and fourth finger off so you’re just barring the seventh fret of the A, D and G string and then we have a sixteenth note rest and then we play this again where we’re barring all on the 7th fret, back to the E5… Then we rest for the rest of that measure… second measure starts off the same way… Then we have a mute strum, down to an A5. So I do that mute strum when I’m on my way down to get that A5… Okay so we come down to that a and then we’ve got a D nine over A (D9/A). So we’re just going to keep our first finger there for this A like we did the A5, we’re just barring, we’ve got the A string open and we’re barring the second fret of the D, G and B string and then we’re going to keep that our fingers there for that and we’re gonna put our second finger down onto the third fret of the B string and our third finger down onto the fourth fret of the D string; this is probably the most difficult part of any of these riffs that we’re looking at. We pull-off those two fingers back up to that barre at the seventh fret and then it just starts over again…

Billy Squier Riff-3 – Everybody Wants You

All right then the last one we’re going to look at is the riff from Everybody Wants You. So for this one we’re going to start off by barring the seventh fret of the A and D string, but this time we’re going to want to use our third finger to do that because this is all made up of chords that are intervals of fourths instead of fifths, instead of being a power chord shape you’re just going to be on the same fret. So we got that seven and that’s one hand and then on the downbeat of two we rest and on the and of two we barre the same thing, but now we’re going to go at the fifth fret so we want to use our first finger… So one and two and, and then for the downbeat of three we’re back up here again, three and four and, so that’s down and then the and before we hit that five there. So then starting on the second measure for the downbeat of one it’s the seven and then for the and of one we’re gonna take our first finger and barre the fifth fret of the G in the B string and then for the downbeat of two back to the seven on the A and D string, back to the fifth fret, back to the seven, rest, and then it starts over again…
