Introduction
Hey everybody how’s it going? This is Darrin with GuitarControl.com bringing you this video lesson. Today I want to show you how to play three somewhat easy riffs and little melody lines from three Bon Jovi songs. So be sure to click on the link in the description for the tabs and let’s get close up and take a look at these Bon Jovi riffs and melodies.
Bon Jovi Melody-1
All right so the first Bon Jovi melody I want to look at is the little intro, I wouldn’t really call it a solo, but it’s just like the little intro melody for You Give Love A Bad Name. So with this we’re going to start off on the 10th fret of the G string with your third finger and you’re going to want to put your first finger onto the ninth fret of the G string also and then you can just go ahead and put your middle finger onto the ninth fret; so we’re eight, nine, ten and the reason is we’re gonna do a bend and it’s a lot easier to bend when you have these other fingers behind you. So we’re to bend this up a whole step and then release the bend and throw some vibrato on it… Then we’re going to go to the 8th fret of the G string so our first finger is already there so we just need to remove these two fingers and then we go back to the 10th fret and we bend… and release back to the eighth fret. And then from there we go to the 10th fret of the D string with your third finger and then to the eighth fret of the D string; so you just move your first finger from the G string to the D string and that’s like the first two measures… Then on the third measure we do just like the first measure again and then on the fourth measure we go back and do that tenth fret bend and release and we pull-off to the eighth fret and then follow that with the tenth fret of the D string. So those last two measures… All right so that’s like half of the riffs and the first four measures… Then going on to measure five it’s the same as the first measure and actually measures 9 and 10 are the same as the first two… And then for the last two measures we bend that 10 on the G string and release and just let it ring out…
Bon Jovi Riff – Bad Medicine
All right so next we want to look at a riff from Bad Medicine by Bon Jovi. This one is the most difficult out of all of these in my opinion, at least this is the one that I have the hardest time with. So for this to kind of get the sound he’s got you want to play with your fingers so you’re just kind of plucking the strings and he’s also got some kind of a wah or something he’s using, so it’s got this… but I’m just going to play it with just a regular tone. So we’re going to start off with our first finger here is on the second fret of the D string and third finger is on the fourth fret of the G string, so it’s just like an E5 chord and this is like made up of eighth notes. So we rest on the downbeat of one and then on the and of one we play that E5 and then for the downbeat of two we play E5 over A (E5/A); so we just simply remove our first finger so now the D string is open. Then we’ve got just this B octave thing, so again leave your third finger on the fourth fret of the G string and then move your first finger to the second fret of the B string and then back to the E5/A, back to the E5 and then the G string open and then back to the E5 again and that’s the first measure… So that last E5 is on the and of four and it’s tied to the downbeat of one on the next measure. So on the second measure we let that ring and then on the and of one we hit that E5 again, E5/A and then the B octave thing. And then this is the part where I make the most mistakes, we come up to the fourth fret of the low E string and we’re going to pick that and slide to the fifth fret and that is a 16th note and this is on the downbeat of three and we follow that with the second fret of the D string for the for the and of three and then for four we just do a G5. So how I’m doing this I go… and I do that pick slide, you know pluck the fourth fret slide to five, so my first finger ends up picking up the second fret of the D string and then when I go to this G5 I just put my middle finger up on the third fret of the low E string and now I’m going to pluck the the low E string and the D and G strings open at the same time and then the whole thing just repeats…Then it just it plays through that a couple of times and that’s the little riff that he starts playing right before the vocals…
Bon Jovi Melody – Never Say Goodbye
All right and then finally we’re going to look at the little melody line from Never Say Goodbye by Bon Jovi and this is from the beginning of the song, the intro lead and it’s pretty easy. We’ve been doing a lot of stuff with just riffs, but I just wanted to use some stuff that you could work on that’s more scalar types of riffs. So this one’s pretty easy, you start off on the second fret of the D string with your first finger and it’s a half note, so we pick that with some vibrato and then on beat three it’s a quarter note and we go to the fourth fret of the G string with your third finger and then we bend that on beat number four with some vibrato. So we’ve got for the first measure; one, two, three, four… And then on the downbeat of the next measure we hit the second fret of the D string again as a half note with some vibrato and then on beat three we go to the fourth fret again and then we do a slide from nowhere to the sixth fret and then to the seventh fret; so, so far… Now after we slide to seven on the downbeat of one of the third measure and then beat 2 is six and you wanna try to do vibrato on all of these; so it’s seven, six, four, two, all quarter notes, and then on measure four it’s the same thing and then repeats…
