How to Play the Riff From “South of Heaven” by Slayer

Hey, how’s it going this is Darrin Goodman with Guitar Control, I want to show you a riff by the late Jeff Hanneman of Slayer called “South of Heaven”. Actually he is one of my favorite guitar players as far as like writing riffs goes. This guy is just knack for coming up with these really cool guitar riffs, really heavy really cool, sounding guitar riffs.

Check the image above to follow the chords and tabs.

Starting off we’ve got the first finger on the 7th fret of the 5th string, play the 6th string open and the 5th string, then go to the 9th fret of the 4th string with your third finger, then you’re going to slide that third finger up a half step to the 10th fret, and then follow with the 9th fret of the 3rd string, then back to the 10th fret to the 8th fret of the 3rd string. This time the 9th fret of the 4th string to the 7th fret of the 3rd string, and you’re going to follow that with the 8th fret of the 4th string to the 7th fret of the 3rd string, back to the 8th fret, back to the 7th, and then 6th, then the sequence repeats.

It’s just slightly different at the end, so the second time you’re going to go to the 6th fret and we’re going to do a repetitive hammer-on and pull offs, a little trill thing from the 6th to the 7th fret. We’re going to pick once and do a hammer-on and pull offs, the entire sequence need to be repeated again, there’s a harmony part for this and they harmonize it in fourths so simply all you have to do is have the other person play this exact same sequence but instead of your first finger being at the seventh fret it’s at the second fret. Anyway the tabs will have both the melody and the harmony for that riff. Hope you enjoyed that and make sure to subscribe on our You Tube Channel and we’ll see you in our next video lessons, thanks for watching.
