Last Chance to win the Bob Weir Guitar! https://guitarcontrol.com/guitarjamsecrets/last-chance-to-win-the-bob-weir-guitar/ https://guitarcontrol.com/guitarjamsecrets/last-chance-to-win-the-bob-weir-guitar/#comments Wed, 29 Feb 2012 03:04:56 +0000 http://www.guitarjamsecrets.com/blog/?p=72 About that Bob Weir autographed
guitar I’ve been blabbing about for the
last month…

Yes, I mentioned we were raffling it away,
so if you already won your tickets, good on you.

If you didn’t, I’m opening it up to everyone
else to get a chance to enter — And we’ll be drawing
the winner next week.

Not only is this a sweet Ovation Celebrity Acoustic,
but its signed by the one-and-only Bob Weir
of the Grateful Dead.  We got it through Jimmy
Dillon’s Blue Star charity, and according to Jimmy,
the last one sold for an ungodly sum.

Not that you care about the money.

🙂

Annnnyway…

If you want to enter the drawing, its just a buck.

But here’s the thing…

I want to make it worth your while,
even if you DON’T win!

That’s why I’m also including a 30-day pass
to the Guitar God Club with your raffle ticket.

There’s another reason I’m doing this…

I just launched a new site and I want
to kick it off with a celebration
and a bang!

It’s called…

(drumroll please)

“BACKSTAGE WITH GUITAR LEGENDS”
https://www.guitarjamsecrets.com/ordering/bobweir/order.php

Come “backstage” with us and listen in
as we pick the brains of the guitar legends.

Blues legends like Johnny Winter and Kenny Wayne Shepherd…

Heavy Metal players from bands like Megadeth and King Diamond…

Rockers from classic bands like Heart and Jefferson Airplane….

and more…

Of course, you’ll also get instant access to the thousands of
video lessons and tabs, backing tracks, software, and all
the other great stuff we have in there.

Plus, you’ll be automatically entered to win Bobby’s guitar.

To make this whole thing even cooler, I’m planning to
draw the winning ticket in a LIVE streaming event next week…

If you win, I’ll even personally call you live (like a radio show, lol) to
congratulate you.

So, grab your dollar and join the party.

The Sound Hound Lounge – All About Killer Tones and Gear You Need to Know https://guitarcontrol.com/guitarjamsecrets/the-sound-hound-lounge/ https://guitarcontrol.com/guitarjamsecrets/the-sound-hound-lounge/#comments Sun, 19 Feb 2012 02:33:22 +0000 http://www.guitarjamsecrets.com/blog/?p=59 Jimmy Dillon makes a guest appearance towards the end of
Secrets of the Jam Masters with Mark Karan…

Its a feature called the Sound Hound Lounge…
its all about killer tones and gear… check it out.

MALE: Welcome to MK Sound Lounge, a new feature.
This is the first time out. I’m going to be sitting
here with my buddy, Jimmy Dillon, and we’re just
going to be rapping about stuff: effects, guitars,
amps, parts, solos, sound, production, all the stuff
that is sound-oriented and music-oriented that coalesces
to make us all have a great handle on a song and make
it a record.

JIMMY: Yep, yep.

MALE: In the spirit of the overall product, we’re
jamming here. We’ve got nothing plotted out. We’re
just going to have a conversation and see what we
can get at.

All right. Well that…

JIMMY: Rockin’ the blues, right?

MALE: Yeah, something like that. That worked in a
little idea that we talked about earlier, the idea
of a pedal tone. You know, as you might have noticed,
as Jimmy was playing through the chord changes there,
I got on that little double stop — thank you Chuck Berry —
and I got on it like a dog on a bone and it stayed there
through all the changes.

Jimmy: We went from some sort of junk blues into kind
of a straight-up rock thing.

MALE: Exactly. It’s all very mutable. It’s all very mutable.
But dig it. Jimmy’s going to play the [unintelligible – 02:17]
again and I’m going to show you, this hangs.

So something that simple can actually be that effective,
you know? It’s pretty cool.

How to Make Killer Guitar Plays With Less Notes https://guitarcontrol.com/guitarjamsecrets/killing-it-with-just-a-couple-notes/ https://guitarcontrol.com/guitarjamsecrets/killing-it-with-just-a-couple-notes/#comments Sat, 11 Feb 2012 15:18:31 +0000 http://www.guitarjamsecrets.com/blog/?p=31

Some of this stuff is going to seem fairly simple.
The main theme to keep in mind here is you don’t
need to be too hip for the room, you don’t need
to always be worrying about blowing minds or being
flashy. What’s going to touch people is being soulful.
What’s going to touch people is playing a melody that
has meaning to you. Because if it has meaning to you,
it’s going to have meaning to them. So have intent.
Whatever you do, know what you’re going for and mean
every note you play.

So here’s one that offers less movement. This is really
one to more demonstrate attitude and intention and how
you can really milk response out of doing something that
isn’t necessarily shreddy or chops-oriented.

A lot of this music, especially in the jam community, in
the blues community, the Americana community, it’s not so
much about chops; it’s not so much about how fast or
complicated your playing is, it’s more about how committed
you are, how much melodic content does it have, how much is
it serving the song and being connected to the song?

So if I were to do something that was primarily one note, I
could do something pretty exciting. I could, say, start with
a note being in E, being in the five of the A, and I’m going
to start by bending the four on the G string to match that
note on the E string. Carlos did that a lot. Now, he moved
around with it. Jimmy did that, too. But what I’m going to
show you is how to just stay on the one thing and milk it
for intensity.

How to Play the 4ths on Guitar https://guitarcontrol.com/guitarjamsecrets/using-4ths-memphis-skies/ https://guitarcontrol.com/guitarjamsecrets/using-4ths-memphis-skies/#comments Thu, 09 Feb 2012 00:13:41 +0000 http://www.guitarjamsecrets.com/blog/?p=28

There’s some basic ideas using fourths with the E major
pentatonic scale over that same progression. That’s just
E major to A major triads. A neat way to do some really
melodic stuff that tends to be rhythmic, it tends to be
good source for parts or for little hook lines in the
course of the song, is to take those scales and play
them as double stops, play them as two note harmonies,
just using the notes out of the pentatonic scale. Or,
just take them down on the B and the E string.

These can be really good for, like I say, lead parts,
hook parts or creating little counter rhythm parts that
play well off of the basic rhythm playing. I’ll show you
how those things would work in context. So I’m going to
start with that first example. Just sort of a descending
fourths in that same scale. All right?

Now, here’s another one where you can just stay on your B
and your E string. Same kind of voicings. That’s just starting
here, moving down to the B, the 7th fret, 4th fret, 2nd, open.

The other thing you can do — and this stuff was really popular
with guitar players like Cornell Dupree, Curtis Mayfield —
work a little melody figure into your rhythm part.So real slow.

So there you have it. There are three ideas using fourths
in E major. You can do lots of other stuff just by being creative.

Win a Bob Weir autographed guitar https://guitarcontrol.com/guitarjamsecrets/16/ https://guitarcontrol.com/guitarjamsecrets/16/#comments Mon, 06 Feb 2012 15:50:03 +0000 http://www.guitarjamsecrets.com/blog/?p=16

Bob himself set up this guitar… here he is with his trusty set of Allen wrenches…

Mark’s credentials include playing
lead guitar for Bob Weir (of the Grateful Dead)
for the past 12 years.

And Yes!

Bob signed a guitar for us… Actually
we worked with Bob and Blue Star Music Camp.
We paid a LOT of money for this guitar…

Because we always like helping out the kids…

AND…

We wanted to do something especially cool to kick off
the Mark Karan launch and give an extra
special bonus to one lucky buyer of

“Secrets of the Jam Masters”.

So…

here’s the scoop on this will go down.

The guitar will actually be raffled off.

As I mentioned, we already made a huge
donation to Blue Star just to get the guitar,
so your participation helps us in that effort.

The first buyer of the course will get 100 free raffle
tickets and have the best chance of winning the guitar.

The next buyer will get 99 free raffle tickets, and
so on…

So speed wins… Gives you the best chance of winning
this guitar that by virtue of Bob’s autograph , gives
it extra mojo power…

(and makes it pretty valuable too)

Thanks Bob!

Hey y’all Thanks so much for all the kind words and wishes… I really like the suggestion: “Secrets of the Jam Masters”… That kind of sums up what the course is all about — guitar tricks and secrets used by great jammin’ players like Dickey Betts, Jerry Garcia, Carlos Santana… Here’s another sample lesson from the DVDs… Hey, I’m Karan, welcome to my first DVD video. We’re going to have a whole bunch of fun exploring a bunch of different stuff. What you were just listening to was my nod to the Allmans and a little excursion in E major, and that’s the first stuff we’re going to be working with. So let’s go. I was playing against an E major, A major progression, very simple. Evocative of a certain southern rock band. And what I was doing was I was working in E major keys, E major scales, using the E major pentatonic, the E major scale itself and the chord tones from the E major. I’m going to show you a few examples of how you might utilize some of that and then I’ll play them for you in the context with the jam itself. The first one I’m going to show you is kind of a cascading thing using the E major pentatonic scale, starting at the octave. Then going to C sharp, then B, G sharp, F sharp, E, C sharp and then back up. So those are all the notes in the E major pentatonic scale and I’m just doing them in a descending fashion, making a little pattern. The second riff I’m doing more chord tones and the notes that I’m actually using are C sharp,E, G sharp, B, and I’m throwing in the A; it’s the [unintelligible – 02:14] in E. Resolving on that B. So those are all chord tones. You have a little bit more depth of harmony when you’re using the chord tones than you do when you’re using a pentatonic scale. And it uses a technique called ghosting where I’m going to take these three strings and I’m going to sweep across them in one motion. So I’ll get more notes in a smaller period of space than I normally would. That’s called a ghost. A little aside. As you’re working with the ghost, you’ll learn that you need to get ahold of a little muting with your right palm or all the notes ring out real sloppy. It will take a little time, but you’ll get used to it. So there’s the second lick. Okay, so I’m going to do another lick here. This is using basically the E major pentatonic scale again, but it’s slipping in a connecting note that you wouldn’t normally use, a chromatic note. So it goes something like this. Now, what I’m doing is I’m taking the F sharp note and bending it to G sharp and then A. Chromatically A sharp, B, same bend but starting from the bend, E, C sharp, B, resolving on the E.
