These one string guitar songs are great for beginners or anyone who’s picking up the guitar for the first time. All you’ll need is a guitar and a little bit of determination! Once you’ve completed this lesson, dive into our how to play guitar songs walk-through guide.
“Seven Nation Army” by The White Stripes.
Has a cool groove with a memorable melody that anyone can memorize and play in only a few minutes. Just play on the A, or fifth string. If you’re a bass player, you can also play this song the same way as the guitar does.
“Iron Man” by Black Sabbath
Is a classic that most people have probably heard before, even if they can’t identify who wrote it. It’s one of the easiest Black Sabbath songs, so if you’re a fan of heavy metal and just learning to play the guitar, this is a great song to start with. To play the riff, just use the A string.
“Smoke on the Water” by Deep Purple
Is another Big Classic like “Iron Man”, chances are you can recognize it without being a fan of heavy metal. To play this line, all you’ll need is the lower E string. Keep in mind that you can also make this riff more powerful by playing the notes as chords, but that’s a lot harder for a beginner, so for now, stick to learning the melody and playing in time.

“Sunshine of Your Love” by Cream
Another Classic, can be played on either the lower E or higher E strings, depending on your taste. It does span across nearly the entire fret board though, so if you wanted to condense it, you would be able to play it on multiple strings, but for now, just practice getting it right on one string.
“New York City Cops” by The Strokes
For those of you who prefer more modern music, this is another great song that can be played on one string, low E. It’s a bit faster than the others though, it uses more of the Staccato technique (not letting the notes ring out), so it’s a little trickier for beginners to get a hang of. Try playing the other songs mentioned before attempting this one.
While these songs only uses one string, it doesn’t mean they’re not great songs. It just goes to show you that simplicity and it isn’t a bad thing!
