How to Write Guitar Riffs the Easy Way https://guitarcontrol.com/chords-rhythm-guitar/how-to-write-riffs/ https://guitarcontrol.com/chords-rhythm-guitar/how-to-write-riffs/#comments Sat, 23 Mar 2013 15:05:07 +0000 https://guitarcontrol.wpmudev.host/blog/?p=2188

There’s tons of ways to write – but here’s some nice insights from Jack Frost… Check it out!

You know, I look at a guitar differently than most people.
I look at it as this. This is your guitar, this is your
second guitar. It depends if you’ve got 22 frets, 24
frets, 23 1/4. I mean, it doesn’t matter. There are
some guitars that are 35 frets. Who knows what it is?

But I look at it as you have two guitars in your hands.
Work on the structure. You don’t need to go, okay, I
have to write every single fret on the guitar right now
or it’s not going to sound good. That’s not correct,
because the Ramones, they pretty much lived the life
of like four chords. But they took those four chords
and they made them sing every which way they could.

So, we talk about the boxes. So let’s start from, I
don’t know, let’s make it easy for the beginning and
then we’ll build. Let’s just start off an A and kind
of like a B in this pattern here. I think that’s a
cool way to walk. Take like the 3rd fret to the 7th
fret in this pattern. We don’t need to use the whole
neck the first time we do it. So let’s try this. We’re
just going to walk. There you go. Look what we just
did. I just kind of made this up as I went along.
It’s not hard to play; it’s not brain surgery, but
it says something. I hummed it. I just gave a little
bit like a… So I went from my A to my B, and you can go…

But I think you want to play power chords for this because
it’s just more throaty. When I say throaty it’s just like —
it’s got something there. I’m not saying, again, I know so
many people look at this and they look at things and go,
oh, it’s metal, metal, metal. It’s not metal. It’s talking
about chords. It’s not just a metal chord. B.B. King never
did an A power chord? I mean, yeah, he did. And it’s like
Keith Urban never played a power chord, or Brad Paisley
because it’s too metal? It’s a chord. There’s no book that
says you’re not allowed to play that chord because that is
the devil’s music. Whatever. There’s always people that
have to say weird stuff like that, but we’re talking
about chords right now.

I basically voiced my voice as I’m playing the guitar.
So I went from my A to my B, then I went down to the D,
to the E, to the F. It’s like a rap song, A to the E to
the D to the E to the F. It’s kind of funny. I’m a rap
guy now. So let’s try this really slow. Really slow,
together, and then we try to have fun with this. I am
not going crazy on my right hand, I’m not playing anything
over the top. I’m basically just playing downstrokes.

Now we can take that and we can really have fun with it.
Again, we’re in that box. We didn’t move from the box.
We stayed in there. We didn’t add any chords, we didn’t
change any chords, we just mixed it around.

What I did was I took it and I kind of made a scale out of
a rhythm. Basically a scale and a rhythm are so much alike,
because when you really think about a chord, the scale is
in the chord. Like you’re playing a C major, it’s a C chord.
There you are and you’re pretty much walking.

So let’s try this and just change our rhythm patterns.
We’ll down it first and then we’ll have a little fun
with the right hand and we’ll see where we go with it.
And then I bet you’ll find something interesting. Here
I am; I made my rhythm. So we changed it.

Now, we’re going to take the same pattern; mix it up.
Basically I could write 20 songs in that pattern right
there, and I just showed you in a box. It was basically
just the same pattern. But I attacked my right hand
totally different every time I did it.
So we’ll do this slow together.

Heavy Power Chord Rhythm Playing in the style of James Hetfield, Scott Ian https://guitarcontrol.com/chords-rhythm-guitar/heavy-power-chord-rhythm-playing-in-the-style-of-james-hetfield-scott-ian/ https://guitarcontrol.com/chords-rhythm-guitar/heavy-power-chord-rhythm-playing-in-the-style-of-james-hetfield-scott-ian/#comments Sun, 17 Mar 2013 16:39:55 +0000 https://guitarcontrol.wpmudev.host/blog/?p=2171

In this Guitar Control video we’re going to talk about “Stabbing the Hell out of these Strings”, down picking the whole way. Scotty and James Hetfield are the “Kings” of this kind of picking.

I was very fortunate enough to be part of Joey Belladonna’s band for a long time and I had to learn all these ridiculous Anthrax songs. Scott, this guy is just ungodly when it comes to right hand picking down.

I don’t had to learn a whole different format of playing. I’m used to be
more of a right-hand triplet picker. So I had to learn how to start from scratch, like we’re going to do together.

We’re going to start talking and hammering it “Hammer of the Gods” kind of picking. Basically you’re going to use your E again. I know why it goes back to E is because it’s a basic structure for all songs. “Iron Man” is
all about that E. So we’re going to talk about down picking.

The most important thing about down picking, it has to sound like it’s very tight. It can’t be sloppy when you’re playing, it’s got to be straight down all the way. It’s like your throat has got to be like a sore nonstop machine gun.

Let’s try this pattern. We’re going to down pick it, straight down. Every eight bars you can stop, take a breath, then two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight; one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. Now, we’re going to walk it like “Painkiller”.

A lot of bands will do this really straight ahead down picking. We’re going to use some notes inside. We’re going to use a D and an E, just to show you the pattern. We’ll put an F in that one, a little trill, like a hammer-on. Let’s
try that together real slow. That’s the pattern, now bring it up. I’ll skip around to show you how it goes, but the whole pattern is just straight ahead.

I never change my picking pattern. It’s all down, it’s all in my left hand going with the trill and my left hand making the movement up and down the neck, real slow up to speed. There’s a whole pattern of using this picking technique. I do a couple of pitch harmonics on the E and the F to give it a cool vibe.

Jack is Back! https://guitarcontrol.com/chords-rhythm-guitar/jack-is-back/ https://guitarcontrol.com/chords-rhythm-guitar/jack-is-back/#comments Wed, 13 Mar 2013 13:38:09 +0000 https://guitarcontrol.wpmudev.host/blog/?p=2151 Jack Frost is back!!!

We’re coming out with Epic Rhythm Guitar Power VOLUME II!

Yeah baby!

This is gonna be awesome — here’s the opening lesson from the DVD. Check it out!

Stay tuned for more !!! Post your comment!

This is Jack Frost here again on my third instructional
DVD. This DVD, we’re going to talk about more rhythm
playing. I know I totally went crazy the last time
talking about rhythms, but I made sure you guys knew
you have to be a rhythm player before you’re a soloist.

I’m going to give a little background about myself. My
name is Jack Frost, again. I’m 44 years old. I’ve been
playing since I was probably 13; professionally since
I was 19. I’ve been in such bands as Sabotage, Lizzy Borden,
Joey Belladonna from Anthrax solo band, Chris Volz from
Flaw, Seven Witches, I’m going on tour right now with
Hades, a bunch of solo records, a studio musician.

All right, guys. Part one of the DVD, we’re going to
talk about alternate picking or down/up picking down. A
lot of people have a different idea how this is, what’s
right, what’s wrong. Listen, there’s no law that says
you can’t down-up-down or down-up-down-up-down-down.
But a lot of people are like, well, the book says…
Listen, we went through this a lot of times. Picking
is in the heart. You can’t tell Tony Iommi he’s picking
wrong, or James Hetfield that his pick is like a machine
down, or Scott Ian that you can’t pick this way.

So we’re going to talk about like mainly the first
portion of this is going to be down-up-down. So we’re
going to use, say, a basic E scale, like an E pattern.
All we’re going to do is this, here’s the rhythm. It’s
down-up-down. I’m going to use a pure power chord.
So we do 7-9 on your E. So you’ve got your 1st finger
on your 7th fret on your A string; your 3rd finger —
remember, this is one, two, three, four, how we do it —
on your 9th fret on the D string; and your E is open.

Now, we’re mainly going to be just picking on the
low E string, but we don’t want the noise and the
hum to make it sound out of key or out of tune.
So we’ve got to keep our fingers here to block it,
so it keeps it really smooth and tight. So here we go.
We’re just going to do like a quick one, two, three.
Now, let’s pick-up the speed. It’s a three pattern,
so it’s one, two, three, so if your drummer is going
double bass. So here we go, we’re going to pick-up
the speed. Every fourth measure we just do a downstroke.
So here we go. This is nonstop, down-up-down and the
last pattern is a down. So here we go.

Now, we can piece this together. Let’s say we stay
on the E and we’re going to move around to an F to a D.
Okay? Now we’re going to stab off the low E onto the
chords. So it’s going to be one, two, three, hit; one,
two, three. So check this out. All we’re doing is we’re
doing one, two, three, then we’re stabbing on the fourth
note. Up to speed. Play along with me just really tight
and smooth. I’ve really slowed it down so beginners
and intermediates can play along. Again.
