Hey, how’s it going everybody.
My name is John McClennan and I’m here
with guitarcontrol.com, bringing you this
lesson on the blues. Right now we’re going
to take a look at sort of a Carl Verheyen
style blues. This is sort of an interesting
lick. It’s a little bit dissonant, but it’s
a unique way of playing, again, through our
12-barre blues song structure. So let’s jump
right in.

We’re in the key of A and what we’re doing
is we’re starting on the 5th fret, sliding
to the 7th and then 5, 7 and then we play
that open A string. This is a cool chord
structure where our end result is going to
be 6, 5, 3. And I play that with my 3rd, 2nd
and 1st finger. But what we’re going to start
out with is 6, 3, 3 and we’re going to hammer
into that 5 with our 2nd finger.

Again, I’m playing this with a pick and fingers.
So you get this… That’s functioning as our A7,
but you’ve just got to hear that slightly
dissonant chord. And then of course we would
take the same thing and apply it to the four
chord now, D.

If we’re thinking about that A7 shape, move it
up to the 10th fret and you’ve got… Now we’re
going to play the open D string because that’s
our root. This chord may be a little easier for
you as far as the stretch up higher. And then
back into the A.

Our last chord that we’re going to apply
this over is the E. So this would now
take us up to the 12th fret position,
12th slide to 14, drop that little E
and play the chord way up high and then
down to D.

Let’s try the whole thing. Ready?
One, two, three. You’re playing A7.

So that’s it. Carl Verheyen blues and
we’ll be sure to catch you in the next
lesson. Click the link below for the tabs.
Thanks again for watching.
