So, check out the 2 Guitar Exercises for Building Hand Strength below to get the most out of your practice time.

Guitar Exercises

1. Practice Playing Up and Down the Fretboard
To do this exercise, place your fretting hand in the first position (so your index finger will be on the first fret available). Then, play the first four frets with each of your four fingers, so you will essentially be playing the notes F, F#, G and G# (this pattern can be referred to as a 1-2-3-4 pattern). Make sure you only use your index finger for the first fret, your middle finger for the second, etc. Do this exercise on every string, starting with the high E to the low E, and then backwards from low E to high E.

2. Practice Other Finger Patterns
Taking the first exercise, we are going to put a spin on it to make it more interesting. Instead of doing a 1-2-3-4 pattern, try alternating it and doing a 1-3-2-4 pattern, or any other pattern you can come up with. To get even more extreme with this strength-building exercise, try this pattern: 1-2-3-4 1-2-1-4 1-3-1-4 1-4-3-2, and play it on all the strings. You might feel your hand starting to cramp up, but it’s only temporary, and it means the next time you do this exercise, it’s going to be easier.

KILLER GUITAR EXERCISES

These two exercises are really great for building strength in your fretting hand, but they can also be great for practicing your playing hand’s abilities. If you play with a pick, these guitar exercises are good for practicing alternate picking, and if you play with your fingers, they are also good for building strength, coordination, and speed. So go out and use these exercises to their fullest!
