Greetings guitar guys and gals, Darrin Goodman here with another mini guitar lesson, today I’m going to be talking about the blues guitar scale.
The blues scale is actually just a modified pentatonic scale, so let’s start with that first. The pentatonic scale is a five tone musical scale that is found all over the world and is used in many different styles and genres of music today including; rock, blues, metal, and country. The scale is a modified major scale and consists of the following intervals; perfect first, minor third, perfect fourth, perfect fifth, and minor seventh. Here is an example of a minor pentatonic scale that I recommend you learn if you don’t already know it.
Now to make this into the blues scale you simply add a diminished fifth to it, which will add a chromatic segment to the scale. When you play a lick and add that flat five into it, it just screams the blues. Here is an example of how to add the blue note to the pentatonic scale.
Another cool thing you can do with this scale that will give it a cool bluesy sound, as well as kind of a country sound, is to use the major third along with the minor third. Here is a lesson I did on this.
