Hey guys,
Here´s a cool trick for playing natural harmonics over the entire fretboard!
Hope you like it…
And please don´t forget to check out the lastest DVD from Jon!
Hey, how’s it going guys. My name is John McClennan
and I’m here with guitarcontrol.com, bringing you
this video lesson. What I want to show you today is
a really cool trick on how to play some harmonics.
Some of you may know how to play your harmonics,
say, at the 12th fret, like this, and the 7th.
And those are great, but you’re limited to those
particular tones. One of the things I like to do
is to be able to use harmonics in any key, on any
chord that I want.
One of the ways that you can do that is through
this technique. I’m playing with a pick and what
I do is I put my pick in the next finger. So if
I’m holding it between my thumb and my first finger,
then I’m going to hold it between my thumb and my
middle finger. Then start with not worrying about
the left hand, put your pick like that, and what
you’ve got to do is you’ve got to make the harmonic
like you would on the 12th fret, but you’re now going
to make it with your right hand.
Remember, when we make a harmonic we’re going to
hover directly over the fret and we’re not going
to push down like we’re fretting the note, we’re
just going to kind of come into contact with the
string. What I’m going to do is I’m going to do
it now with my right hand like this. And then
my pick, underneath is picking. So that’s where
I’m getting the notes.
Once I get that technique together I can take
any chord and I can play harmonics on it. Try
doing this with your first finger. Take your
first finger and bar on the 5th fret and what
you have to do is you have to outline that
chord an octave above, meaning 12 frets above.
So if here I’m on the 5th, then I’m going to
go up to the 17th fret here and I’m going to
play the harmonics there, like this.
Then you can sort of just play individual
notes or you can do them all. You can even
strum it like this. It’s a really cool sound.
One trick to getting these to sing out is,
here I am on my Stratocaster. I throw it in
the back pick-up and that will just let the
harmonics sing-out a little bit more.
Practice that and remember, pick in the next
finger and we’ll see you in the next video lesson.
Thanks for watching and I hope this helps.
