Hammer ons from NOWHERE!

Hey, how’s it going? I’m Claude Johnson and today
I want to talk about hammer-ons from nowhere.
This is a technique where you’re going to be
hammering-on to a string, but the note that you
played before it was on a different string.

So if we have this real simple, descending lick,
basically three notes down the G pentatonic scale.
So the picking on that is basically I’m just doing
up strokes, continuous upstrokes on that high E
string. That’s all I’m picking. Here’s the lick.
Just pick on the high E string, hammer-on, and
because we’re hammering to a different string,
I call it like a hammering-on out of nowhere.

Our next lick is also in G pentatonic and this
time we’re going to be going down and up the
scale, down and up, down and up; down four notes
and back. The picking for this, we’re going to
use an upstroke on the high E string, hammer-on
out of nowhere onto the B, pull off and then
we’re going to pick, down on the G string and
down on the B string and hammer-on and then repeat it.

So again, upstroke, hammer-on, pull-off, downstroke,
downstroke, hammer-on.
