Introduction

Hey everybody how’s it going? This is Darrin with GuitarControl.com bringing you this video lesson. Today I’ve got a lesson for the beginners out there on three cool guitar riffs famous guitar riffs that are played just on one single string and all three of these are just being played on the low E string. So I wanted to do this so the beginners out there had something that they could play that they could recognize right off the bat that’s a little bit cooler than playing Mary Had A Little Lamb and those types of things like that. So be sure to click on the link in the description for the tabs and let’s get close up and take a look Three Easy Single String Beginner Guitar Riffs.

Single String Riff – 1

All right so the first Easy Single String Beginner Guitar Riff we’re going to look at is War Machine by KISS. So we start off by just playing the open low E string and like I said this is all on your low E string. So we have the string open and then to the seventh fret… and then open to the fifth fret and then back to the open and then to the seventh fret… so that’s the first measure. Then for the second measure we do open to seven to open to three to five… so the first two measures… Then starting on measure three we’re back to open to the seventh fret back to open to the third fret back to open and back to the fifth fret…  And then our last measure we have open to the fifth fret back to open to the third fret to the fifth fret… so the whole thing…

Single String Riff – 2

The next Easy Single String Beginner Guitar Riff we have Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes and again all on the low E string. So we start off we’re on the 12th fret and we have 12 12 and then there’s a little rest; so this one is not all run together like the last one was, it’s got these breaks in it. So we’ve got 12 and then a little 16th note rest to the 15th fret and another rest, back to the 12th fret and another rest to the 10th fret… that’s the first measure. Then for the second measure we come down to the eighth fret and it’s a half note, so one two and then down to the seventh fret for three four; so the first two measures… Then for the third measure we go back up to the 12th fret, so the third measure is actually the same as the first measure, so the 12 12 rest 15 rest 12 rest 10… Then we have the fourth measure and we have 8th fret to 10 8 7… so the whole thing…

Single String Riff – 3

And then finally we have Iron Man by Black Sabbath. So again this is all on the low E string and if you listen to this song the main riff is played with chords… but once they start singing they do that same thing, but just the single notes. So again here we’re going to be playing this on the low E. So we start off with the 7th fret to the 10th to the 12th fret twice; so it’s like one two three and four… so that’s the first measure. And then for the second measure we’re going to come all the way up here to the 15th fret and we’re going to go from 15 to 14 and back and forth one, two, three times 15 14 15 14 15 14 and those are all 16th notes and then we come back to ten… and then two twelve’s… So the whole sequence…

Conclusion

All right so there you have it. Three easy recognizable riffs that are all just single notes played on just a single string and these ones were all being played on our low E. So if you’re a beginner this is a really good one to kind of just get you going so you’re playing something that you’ve heard before and recognize and a little cooler than just playing something like Mary Had a Little Lamb or something like that.
