Black Sabbath Riff-1 – Children Of The Grave

All right so the very first thing, they’re tuned down an entire step and a half. So I’m tuned all the way down to a C-sharp, you can play these in standard tuning, but just know that it won’t sound quite the same because you’re going to be higher. It sounds kind of weird on this guitar because this thing just isn’t really set up to be played this low so it sounds a little strange I think. So the first Black Sabbath riff we’re going to look at is from Children Of The Grave. So you want to take your first finger and put it here on the seventh fret of the A string and we’re gonna be playing the open low E string; so we’ve got one and, and then for beat number two we’re going to play triplets, but we’re going to have our first finger here and we’re playing the E and the A string, so it’s like… one and two yel-low three and four yel low and you palm mute the whole thing. So you do that basically three times and then you do it twice on the first measure and then once on the second measure because it takes care of the first two beats and then for beat three and four we’re going to just do this C5; so my first fingers are on the eighth fret of the low E string and then we’re picking up the tenth fret of the A string my third finger. So that’s beat three and then beat four we just move it down a half step and then the whole thing would just repeat…

Black Sabbath Riff-2 – Snowblind

All right so the next Black Sabbath riff we’re going to look at is the riff from Snowblind. So here we start off regular power chord, E5; so I’m here on the seventh fret of the A string and the ninth fret of the D string and we’re going to hit this as a quarter note. So one and then we just move it up a whole step so now we’re at the 9th fret and 11th fret for beat two and then we’re going to move it up a half step so we’re 10th fret and 12th fret and this is a half note so this is beats two and three. So it’s like one two three four and then we come down to the fifth fret and this is the beginning of the second measure for D5 and this is one two and then we move it up a whole step back to the seventh fret and ninth fret and this is on beat three and we slide out of it and we just pick up a regular, well we slide out of it and we hit the open A string on the and of four and then so that’s the first two measures. And then starting on the third measure we just have a regular old C major chord and we’re going to play this basically kind of arpeggiating it; so we’re playing starting on the A string… and it’s all eighth notes… and then for the fourth measure we just go to a regular D chord and we do the same thing, the only difference is that we’re starting on the eight on the D string. So we go string D, G, B, E, so we do this down, down, down, down and then starting on the on the downbeat of three we hit that high E string again; so all I do is just change my pick direction and now I’m going to go… and then the whole thing just repeats…

Black Sabbath Riff-3 – Fairies Wear Boots

All right then the last Black Sabbath riff we’re going to look at is the riff from Fairies Wear Boots. So we’ve got that same power chord shape we’ve been doing, but now we’re going to be doing it here on the third fret of the low E string with your first finger and then the fifth fret of the A string with your third finger and this is makes it G5. And then for beat two we’re going to take the shape we’re just going to move it up so now we’re on the fourth fret of the low E string and the eighth fret of the A string… and then we come back down three and on the and of three we’re just going to barre all the way across the third fret of the D, G and B string and high E string. So when we hit this it’s a quarter note, but we’re hitting it on the and of three; so and four and, and then on the and four we come down here to the we do an F5 down at the first fret… Okay so we come down hit that on the and of four and then starting on the second measure it’s the same as the first measure, so the that just kind of makes this little loop thing. So we do that three times and the first three measures are just the same thing and then on measure four we’re going to play the same notes, but it’s the same chords rather, but it’s going to be the timing is different. So now we’ve got one and, and then we’re going to come up two and then on the and of two we’re going to hit the open low E string… and then on the downbeat of three we’re going to be back to here and then we’re going to do the same thing we did before with what we were doing this, but now we’re going to do it on the three lower strings… and then on the and of four it’s just the single note and then the whole thing just starts over again… and then the whole thing would just repeats…
