The Wind Cries Mary

Introduction

Hey how’s it going? My name is Jon McLennan thanks so much for hanging out with me in my studio. Today want to give you a guitar lesson in the style of Jimi Hendrix and this is from the song The Wind Cries Mary and the rhythm part is fantastic and so is the lead stuff so let’s dive in and check out some of these double stop licks.

The Wind Cries Mary

So double stops are ubiquitous in Hendrix’s rhythm playing, but they’re also in his lead playing as well. So that’s what’s happening here in the solo on The Wind Cries Mary. He’s taking this double stop of 13 and 13, these two notes which to me I’m thinking off an F chord here like this… Then you hold down your fingers and hammer-on with your third finger to the second string, basically a whole step above, which in this case is the 15th fret. So 13 and 13 making sure you’re on the right frets to 13 on the first string and the fifth fret on the second string. Now make sure that that goes on its tip, you know don’t let it go, that’s not the sound. This is the second so it’s just a quick hammer-on and it starts out… then the band goes and that’s all there is to it.
