How to Play A Jazz Chordal Lick in the Style of Howard Roberts

What’s happening, guys? This is John McClennan and I’m here with guitarcontrol.com, bringing you this video lesson. I’m showing you a Howard Roberts chord lick today and if you’re not familiar with the jazz guitar player Howard Roberts, you should check him out, a phenomenal player and I think pretty underrated. He was a studio session player in the ’60s and ’70s I think. So here we go. We’ve got a lick on top. And what I love about this is it’s just a simple pentatonic lick, bluesy. What we’re going to do is we’re going to harmonize that entire lick in 13th chords. We’ve got the 3rd fret, 4th fret, 5th fret, 3rd fret. That’s our chord that’s going to move in parallel motion across the whole guitar. Starting on the and of one, and then we’re going to go up to the 6th fret, 8th fret, sliding into the 10th and then 8th fret, 6, 8, home to the 3rd fret. The real great sound there.
