a new way to write riffs

Hi Friend,

Here’s a cool way to explore
different sounds on your guitar:

Harmonized scales.

Here’s how it works:

Take a scale, any scale…

For each note, start stacking
other notes from the same scale
on top of it.

When you think about it,
this is how chords are formed
in the first place.

Take a note, and put a third and fifth
above it, and you have a triad.

Use the third, fifth, and seventh, and
you have a 4-note chord, or jazz chord.

But you can use other intervals as well.

4ths, 5ths, 6ths…

6ths have a particularly useful and interesting
sound and it’s very common in blues, jazz, and
even rock.

But what about 10ths?

10ths are like the 3rd above the octave.

It’s a very useful sound because you’re getting
the major or minor flavor in there… but with
such a wide interval gap that it sounds more
like a melody and bassline than a chord.

One cool way to use this is with open strings in
the key of G major.

Try descending too..

Try mixing going further up (or down) the
scale and mixing up the different notes.

Or try changing the melody (or bass) note
around on some of these.

Get creative.

You can come up with some cool “classical”
sounding riffs.
