How’s it going, guys? This is John McClennan
here with guitarcontrol.com, bringing
you this video lesson. I want to show you sort of
a Django-style comping. Definitely an old school way.
You’ll hear it in jazz as well.
We’re going to start on a G major 7 here: 3rd fret,
4th fret, 4th fret, 3rd fret, and on all these
chords I hit the bass note and then I hit the
chord — the rest of the chord and I kind of choke it off.
So here’s the first movement: G major 7 to G
sharp diminished 7. This would be 4, 3, 4, 3.
And then A minor 7: 5, 5, 5, 5. And then I do
that same movement again where I’m just filling-in
those chromatic notes with diminished chords. So 6, 5, 6, 5,
and then on the III chord, B minor 7 to our typical
jazz turnaround, 3, 6, 2, 5, 1. So this is B minor 7,
to E7 sharp 9: 7, 6, 7 8; to A minor 7 to D7 flat 9.
So this is 5, 4, 5, 4; resolving to G major 7.
Another way you could do this, too, is just without
the bass note and just playing… So really cool stuff for comping.
