The Kinks Riff-1 – All Day And All Of The Night

Alright so the first The Kinks riff to look at is All Day And All Of The Night. So this is all just completely made up of power chords that are all rooted on the low E string. So the first one we have is G5; so first finger on the third fret of the low E string and then my third finger is on the fifth fret of the A string and my fourth finger is on the fifth fret of the D string. Now if you’re a beginner and you’re having trouble getting that you can just omit the note that’s on the D string and just play the ones that are on the low E and the A string. So if this stretch is kind of difficult then feel free you know use your pinky instead after you get more experience and stuff this won’t be hard to do, but as beginner sometimes this is difficult. All right so we’re just going to be using the same shape but we’re just going to be moving it around so we start off with it here so this is G5 and it’s a quarter note; so we’ve got one and then on the downbeat of two we rest and then on the and of two we hit this again and then on beat three we move it down a whole step. So now it’s F5; so I’m on the first fret with my first finger in the third fret with my third and fourth fingers… So that’s the first measure and it’s one two and three four and, and then on starting on the second measure we have B5. So we’re gonna take the shape and we’re gonna move it up so it’s on, or excuse me B flat five (Bb5); so it’s on the sixth fret of the low E with your first finger and the eighth fret of the A and the D string with your third finger and we hit that one and two, and then on the and of two we come back down to G5 and then we rest until the and of four, which is back down to the and again… Then on the third fret back to the G5 and this one is actually just the same as the first measure and the fourth is the same as the second and then it just repeats and that’s the entire riff…

The Kinks Riff-2 – Picture Book

All right so the next The Kinks Riff we’re going to look at is the riff from Picture Book and this is all just single notes and it’s just all eighth notes and it’s really easy to count. So we start off with the low E string open for one and then on the downbeat of two I’m going to go to the second fret with my first finger, two, and then on the and of two the fourth fret with my third finger… Now I’m going to go to the A string and do the exact same thing, two opens, second fret, fourth fret and that’s the first measure; one and two and three and four and. Then for the second measure I’m going to go to the D string and start off the same way with two opens and then two four… and that’s one and two and, and then starting on the downbeat of three it’s the open G string, three and, so we hit it twice, three and then we come back to the D string and we’re going to go fourth fret… down to the third fret and that’s on the and of four of the second measure and then the downbeat of one on the third measure is the second fret of the D string as well… and then it just more or less kind of starts over again. So the difference here is that the third measure is the same as the first it just you just don’t play the open low E string twice, it’s just once because it’s coming in on the and of one and two and three and four and then on the fourth measure D string one and to the second fret again two fourth fret for the and of two and then on the downbeat of three just the open G string and then we rest for the rest of that measure…

The Kinks Riff-3 – You Really Got Me

All right then the last The Kinks Riff we’re going to look at is the riff from You Really Got Me. This is really, really simple to play and it just uses the same power chord shapes that we did in All Day and All of the Night and it’s also played in you know the same area. So we’re going to start off with the F5; so my first fingers on the first fret of the low E string and then I’m picking up the third fret of the A and B string with my third and fourth finger and again; if that’s difficult for you can just omit the D string for this. So we rest one two three four and on the and of four we hit that and then starting on the next measure for the downbeat of one we’re going to do G5 so we’re just going to move this shape up a whole step and we hit that one and then on the downbeat of two we come back down to the F5 on the and of two, back to the G5 and then we rest three, four and, and then it just repeats… All right so that riff basically stays the same throughout the rest of the verse, it just moves. So we you know start here with the F to G… and then it’s going to move G to A… and then it’s going to move up here to C and it’s going to go from C to D; so I’m on the eighth fret of the low E with my first finger in the tenth of the A and then up a whole step to 10 and 12…
