One of the most funky and tasty guitar scales out there is the Dorian scale. Play it with a funk groove or over a blues track, play it over a jazz tune, whatever you want, and it will sound so good. It is the combination of a minor 3rd and a natural 6th that gives it this great sound. The thing with the dorian scale is that it adds a very clear tritone to a minor chord, which just brings this whole texture that sounds so awesome.
The dorian scale is the 2nd mode of the major scale. Which means that if you have a C major scale, and you start it from its second degree (D) you will get a dorian scale. So if you play D, E, F, G, A, B, C, then you are playing a dorian scale. The structure of this specific combination of notes is what gives it this unique sound. Why don’t we check out some of the scale patterns across the fretboard:
This is a great beginner scale, because it is mainly using open notes. Any scale that is positioned on the lower frets and uses open notes is a beginner scale!
The next position is a very common position for the dorian scale:
It looks familiar because we usually play the A pentatonic scale there. That’s like the first scale we all learn.
The next position is a bit trickier:
Now that you know the 3 main positions, go ahead and practice them. Set up a metronome and play them up and down. You could also combine them into one big scale like this:
This will for sure like super awesome when you play it live. Big runs are always impressive to see.
A great Dorian chord progression that you could use for this A dorian scale is Am D7.
That is like a classic Dorian progression.
