Hey, everybody this is George Marios with Guitar Control, I do hope you enjoy this lick.

Check the image above to follow the chords and tabs.

This is quite a cool riff, it’s got an hour and beat vibe which is good because it applies the sort of tapping on the toe on the floor technique which is really good especially if you’re sort of comping yourself singing, or if you’re playing with another singer and you want that kind of feel. It’s in the key of E minor as a set, and we’re going to start with the e minor chord.

Now, I’m using drop chords so we’re always going to have the root age string then we always skip a string and the rest of the degrees of the court are going to be G string and the B string. Start by playing E on the seventh fret of the 8th string with a plectrum and then I’m going to play B on the g string with my middle finger and then G with my fourth finger and head over to F sharp, that’s the first line and now we going to fit the top in, it’s on the two, you can also plate it sometimes to play them in a more chordal manner. I will keep playing at low E while playing it sharp so instead of doing it, you can play the two together.

The second line applies the same kind of principle, then we’re going to play a D major six chord or as an inversion of the B minor chord, but we’re going to change our base to D same pattern. I’m playing it with a plectrum and playing beat with my middle finger, playing F sharp but not fourth finger changing to E on the B string with a tap.

I do prefer to play it in a more chordal manner, playing the routes then head over to C major six quarter and apply the exact same pattern. We’re going to play deep with a pick and play E with that fourth finger and heading over to D, the pattern is and then we end on a b7 chord.

We’re going to arpeggiate the chord, then we’re going to play B on the 2nd fret, you’ll pick and play D sharp with middle finger and play the 8th with our fourth finger and open B. Once again I’m playing open B as well as low B for more quarter four sounds, so the first part will be sounding like.  And the second part has quite identical to the first, so you still play e manner that way, but instead of a quarter way of approaching the B7 we’re just going to play a line b7 chord and feel free to change it. By the way it’s always cool to sort of play around with licks and change them around, so what I’m doing is playing B, D sharp, E, and F sharp just to break the pattern a little bit.

video 3

This is a cool sort of Hendrix-y, Stevie Wonder type riff. It’s in the key of E. So we’re going to start with E7 sharp 9 chord, the so-called Hendrix chord.

To play this chord, you have the root, which is E on the 7th fret of the A- string. You’ve got the major 3rd, G sharp, on the 6th fret of the D-string. Flat 7 on the 7th fret of D on the G-string and the sharp 9, which is G, which is found on the 8th fret of the B-string.

As soon as we kick-off the lick we’ll play the chord and then we head over to D on the 5th fret of the A-string; then head over to E. Then we’re going to play G on the 5th fret of the B-string. Then we go back to E on the 7th fret of the A-string and then we’re going to play the following line. So we’re going
to play D on the 5th fret and back to the root, E, on the 7th fret of the A string.

Now I’m going over to the second part. Let’s refresh it, which is a really cool, bluesy kind of line. Once again, we’re going to start off with an E7 sharp 9 chord and we’re going to go back to D, then E. Then we’re going to slide from A on the 7th fret of the D-string to B on the 9th fret. It’s quite a rapid slide. You don’t get a chance to listen to A all that much. Then straight ahead you’re going to play the D on the 7th fret of the G-string. Then
we’re going to slide back from B to A on the B-string, then pull-off to G and then go back to E. Then back to the riff.

Those little licks are really cool because it teach you to fit in between sort of playing chords and especially if you’re playing in a trio setting and you get a lot of space. You can do a lot of that. So let’s play the lick one more time.

Upbeat Funk Guitar Riff with Muting Technique in A Minor - Funk Rhythm Guitar Lesson
video 2 Hey, everybody. This is George Meyers on behalf of Guitar Control. I do hope that you enjoy this lick and you will find the transcription on the link under the video. Let’s check it out. This is a really, really cool lick and its fairly challenging because it is expanded all over the strings set. Its really important that you have nailed your muting technique before tackling things like that. Really, a simple way to go about it is to start by picking a scale and try playing this scale accenting every note by doing quite wide motions and making sure you’re not hearing any other noise but the one out of the scale. Because what you have to think about, funk music is very expressive and it’s all about the groove. So you cannot be too careful. You want to be able to play freely without having any noise in between notes. So let me explain the riff. We’re going to start on A on the 5th fret of the low E string. I’ll start it with a downstroke. Then what I’m doing is I’m playing G on the 8th fret of the B string. As you can see it’s quite a big leap, with an upstroke. Then heading over to the D on the G string; and C on the G string; and A on the B string; then G on the D string. Then A on the D string; back to C on the G string. So we’ve got that little melody going on. This is the first part. The second part starts on A again. We head to G on the B string; then D on the G string; then C on the G string; and A on the D string; then G on the D string; and then we do a really cool slide. So what we’re going to do is we’re going to start on D on the G string, slide to E on the G string, so D is heard very, very briefly. It’s got to be quite a rapid slide. Then end on C on the G string. Now, I’ve seen quite a lot of people play funk music and a lot of the times you can see people performing and trying to be a bit too careful. I mean, funk music is all about fun and dancing, so I quite like sometimes when it’s not actually 100% clean, when you can get a bit of the noise and a bit of the grittiness, but its all about attitude. So when you practice that kind of music you’ve got to really mean it because the way you’re going to practice it is going to reflect the way you’re going to perform it at a gig or even with your friends or whatever. I hope you enjoyed that. See you soon.

Hey, this is George Meyers with Guitar Control, I do hope that you enjoy this lick, let’s check it out.

video 1

This is quite a funky little riff in the key of A and it’s basically based on a counter-melody. What I mean by that is there is a melody going all the way through and the bass notes change. So you’ve got this melody. And then the bass notes change. So we start in A on the 5th fret, then we’re going to play A on the 7th fret of the B string, then G and A again. So all together.

We’re going to play C on the 5th fret of the G-string and then we’re going to go back to A on the 7th fret of the B-string and then play G. So all together.

In terms of picking, I can’t say that I’m really thinking about it. I think the important thing is to have your muting technique sort of nailed so that you can just kind of feel it thing. When it comes to groove-based music I have found if you get too clinical about it, it kind of loses the point. So as long as you feel the groove and you’re confident about your muting, it should work.

For the first part what you’re going to do is you’re going to go to G on the E- string and then you’re going to play the exact same counter-melody. Then you’re going to go to F sharp. All together.

Now there’s a slight alteration, we’re going to go to F, and then we’re going to head to A on the B-string, then G on the 5th fret of the B-string, then back to A and that’s as far as we’re going to go this time. So we’re going to play the entire counter-melody and we’re going to conclude the lick by playing the low E and then play G and A. So all together, slowly.

I hope you really enjoyed this and feel free to stay tuned for more licks. Cheers.
