How to Play Blues Turnaround in Key of A On Guitar

Hey, how’s it going this is Jon McLennan with Guitar Control, excited to bring you this blues guitar lesson and we’re looking at a turnaround in the key of A and an A Blues and I was just playing like an 8 bar blues a la key to the highway but you can use this and you can move it around to any key and you could use it in 12 bar blues or an 8 bar blues.

The basic idea of a turnaround is that it’s happens in the last two bars of the blues and it takes you from the end back to the top again it has a real distinct character to the melody or the lick that you’re playing as a blues guitar player, you want to have plenty of these at your disposal so I’m thinking basically off this A shape here and I’m starting with my first finger on the 4th fret and then my pinky on the 7th fret and that’s on the 5th string and then 4th string, so those two notes together with two frets between my fingers and I’m going to play the 5th string to the 4th string and then back to the 5th string and first finger is going to sort progressively crawl up to the 7th fret while the pinky stays there. I’m with seven and seven so one of the things you’re going to do is work out a fingering.

Here’s what I’m doing, I’m using my first finger pinky, slide my first finger up then I’m using my second finger and then my third finger goes down for the last pluck. The rhythm is basically triplets, three notes to one beat, then I end with this real nice C7 sharp five chord it’s basically just a dominant 7 sharp 5 and it’s a real distinct sound you’ll hear those sort of like a T-bone Walker slow blues like just setting up the five chord, real cool sound with that dominant 7 sharp 5 augmented chord which is basically cool. Here’s the lick one more time starts on beat two, one, so let’s see if we can try that in the context of an eight bar blues so that should give you an idea there to get started.
